How to Force Favicon Refresh

When you change the favicon for your website, it is really hard to get the new favicon to display, right? You open your website, refresh your browser again and again, delete your browser's history and everything then refresh again, but you still can not see the new favicon.

Don't worry it is not that hard to get your favicon to refresh.

Method 1:

Add a link tag to the header section of your default page adding a query string to your favicon.ico filename. This query string will force browsers to not use the cached version of favicon image and download your new favicon.

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.yoursite.com/favicon.ico?ver=1" />

Method 2:

This method will be effective only on your local browser. You can use this method to see the new icon before forcing it for everybody using the Method 1 above.

1. Go to “www.yoursite.com/favicon.ico” address using your browser
2. Do “Ctrl+F5” until you see your new favicon image in your browser
3. When you get the new favicon image in your browser, browse to¬†“www.yoursite.com”
4. Now you should be seeing the new favicon image

Hope this helps someone.

Good luck,
Serdar.
