WordPress – WAMP Server – HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.

First of all don't worry! I encountered this problem today and I solved it. Here is how.

This error message indicates that there is probably a problem with one of the services running in WAMP Server (2.4). There is a good chance that either Apache or MySQL service is not working.

Check the WAMP Server icon. What color is it? Is it orange/yellow? I think it is…

Run “services.msc” command to bring up the “Services” window.
Check the services “wampapache” and “wampmysqld”, are they both working?

When I checked my services what I saw was “wampmysqld” service was not started. When I tried to start it manually I got this error message:

Windows could not start the wampmysqld service on Local Computer. Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly.

Why? What was wrong?

To see the problems related to your MySQL service you need to open the “mysql.log” log file as shown below.

When the log file opens search for “error”. Do you see any error messages? I saw the message below which was pretty clear.

“Do you already have another mysqld server running on port: 3306?”

Actually I did have a stand-alone MySQL installation whose service was already running on port 3306!
I opened the “Services” window again and stopped “MySQL56” service (name of this service depends on your MySQL version), then started “wampmysqld” service.

Now everthing was okay and WAMP Server icon was all green meaning all the services were working okay.

If your problem is related to Apache, then check Apache error log (apache_error.log) and Apache access log (access.log), I am sure you will find a clue in one of them.

Hope this helps someone.

Good luck,
Serdar.
