A couple of days ago I was reading this post named A reminder about widget links. There they said stuff that sounded like your site might get penalized for having a link from your widgets back to your site.
Check out this paragraph:
“Widgets can help website owners enrich the experience of their site and engage users. However, some widgets add links to a site that a webmaster did not editorially place and contain anchor text that the webmaster does not control. Because these links are not naturally placed, they’re considered a violation of Google Webmaster Guidelines.”
Below is my question in response to that statement:
Does this mean widgets with spammy links or advertisement links for other/unrelated websites will get the penalty? Or does it also mean if I have widgets embedded on other sites by other site owners with a single, simple, legitimate link to my own site (which is actually a widget generation site) will result in me (my site) getting the penalty from google too (unless I add rel=”nofollow”)?
I can understand sources of widgets with spammy/unrelated/ for sale links in their widgets being penalized but I don’t get it why decent sites with legitimate widgets with just a single link back to their site would still get penalized.
I carried the issue to webmaster central help forum. Let’s see how the discussion goes..
